5 Stylish Ideas For Kitchen Window Treatments

Posted by on 12:42 pm in Uncategorized | Comments Off on 5 Stylish Ideas For Kitchen Window Treatments

The kitchen is probably the most functional room in your home, and you want window treatments that follow suit. However, there’s no need to get utilitarian in your window treatment design. Indeed, the windows and their treatments might be the only break in a room filled with appliances and storage. Select window treatments that enhance the style of your kitchen while maintaining its functionality. Banded Roman Shades Fabric shades such as the Roman style can be both decorative and functional. They lay flat to the window yet control light access with a simple cord. For added style, consider selecting a solid-colored Roman shade with a patterned band. The solid color should be a neutral found elsewhere in your kitchen. The patterned band should either highlight your color palette or repeat in your kitchen, such as in seat cushions. Unique Window If you have only a single window in your kitchen, Better Homes and Gardens suggests highlighting it with the window treatment. For example, mix patterns in a Roman shade and valance. To pull this look off, make sure the base color of the patterns is the same. For easy cleaning, both the shade and valance should be made from washable fabric. Layered Valances In the same vein, layering can work for multiple windows as well. However, to avoid overpowering the rest of the décor, it’s necessary to keep the color palette neutral. Likewise, consider selecting valances and shades in the same fabric. The result is a chic textural look that enhances your kitchen’s style. Plantation Blinds Many kitchens feature a breakfast nook in a bump out. However, the design presents a challenge for window coverings. This is a good space for having plantation blinds installed. The blinds are custom fit to the windows. Likewise, their extra-wide louvers allow you to control the sun with minimal effort. Indeed, you can have motorized blinds installed that are set to a timer. Such a set up means you don’t have to maneuver around the table and banquet seating typical in breakfast nooks. Café Curtains Café curtains are a classic in the kitchen for a reason. They allow you to control the sunlight without blocking the view. Café curtains take up only the bottom half of the window. As a bonus, they typically come in various colors and patterns, allowing you to update the look of your kitchen without a radical overhaul. You can even pair café curtains with a matching valance for a more formal look. Kitchen window treatments should provide privacy and light control while presenting a stylish addition to your décor. Explore your options through companies like Sav-Mor...

Proper Steps to Maintain a Hardwood Floor

Posted by on 7:17 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Proper Steps to Maintain a Hardwood Floor

If you have just had hardwood flooring installed in a room in your home, you are most likely enjoying the beauty it incorporates into your room’s design. Hardwood flooring is a pleasing material that can remain looking like new if you take the proper steps to maintain it. Here are some tips to use to keep your hardwood flooring looking great for years to come. Prevent Scratching Whether you have a polyurethane or wax finish on your wood floors, you will want to be diligent in keeping furniture or other items from scratching the surface. Scratches are unsightly and may be a bit difficult to fill in, causing a refinishing of the entire floor to be necessary. To avoid scratches, place several area rugs in the room in high-traffic areas to protect the surface of the wood. Place felt pads on each of the legs of your furnishings so they glide across the surface rather than digging in. Make sure to vacuum regularly to remove sand, grit, or larger dirt particles, which are known to scratch as they are tracked through a room. Clean Regularly Regardless of the finish on your flooring, it will need to be routinely cleaned to remove dirt from the surface. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft-bristle brush attachment to remove dirt easily. Do not rub the attachment over the wood, but hold it a bit above the surface instead so it does not cause scratching. In between vacuuming sessions, use a soft-bristled broom to remove dirt from viewed areas. Avoid Moisture Wax finish on a hardwood floor should not have moisture applied at all. If you have a polyurethane or similar finish on your flooring, you can use a damp mop to wipe down the floor, but it must be dried completely using a piece of microfiber cloth, as moisture left on the surface can cause riddling. If something spills on a hardwood floor, be sure to wipe it up immediately. Add Protection When your floor appears cloudy or lacking luster, it is time to spruce it up with a coating of surface finish or wax, depending on which is already present on the wood. If you are using a surface finish, simply apply the product, rub it into the flooring, and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer’s directions. For wax, apply a layer to the wood, allow it to dry, and buff until the floor has a pleasing amount of shine. Use less wax on flooring under furniture and a bit more on high-traffic areas so it wears evenly. For more information about hardwood floors, consider going to this...

Small Apartment Or House? 3 Ways You Can Get The Crafting Space You Deserve

Posted by on 7:31 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Small Apartment Or House? 3 Ways You Can Get The Crafting Space You Deserve

Do you want a craft room, but don’t have any space to devote to it? Do you feel like your craft and hobby supplies have taken over all of the surfaces and storage nooks in your home? If so, you’re probably looking for ways to contain the mess. Perhaps you’re even dreaming about the day when you can have a fully-organized and completely functional hobby room, a place where you can stop in the middle of something without having to clean anything up. Well, you can have all of that now, even in your small home. Following are a few clever ways you can create a crafting space without sacrificing any usable space in your home.  Converted Closet If you have an empty closet, you can customize it with a closet organization system to create your very own craft space. Closet systems for a typical, reach-in closet can cost several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on the materials and finishes you select. When you select this option, you can combine drawers, shelves and counters to create the perfect craft space. Simply open the doors of your custom closet and slide up a chair to begin working on all your favorite crafts.  Murphy Bed Twist If you don’t have a closet to spare, you may want to think about converting a free-standing Murphy bed into a fold-away craft space. Many pieces already have drawers and cabinets built right in, so storage won’t be a problem. If you can’t find a suitable piece or if such a piece is still too large for you, think about a fold-away desk. While a desk won’t give you as much storage as a large piece of furniture, it will still allow you to close up your craft area when it’s not in use.  Repurposed Armoire An armoire, television cabinet, kitchen hutch or similar piece of furniture can be used to create a darling little craft space. However, you may want to add a fold-up shelf so you can have a work surface built right in. If you’re not particularly handy when it comes to wood-working projects, an old desk cabinet will give you everything you need and more.  You don’t need an empty room in order to create your very own dedicated craft space. All you need is a little ingenuity and a few square feet of space to create the craft nook of your...

3 Things To Consider When Buying Granite Countertops

Posted by on 6:01 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on 3 Things To Consider When Buying Granite Countertops

Are you in the process of remodeling your kitchen? Are new granite countertops a part of your remodeling plans? Granite countertops can add a level of sophistication and style to your kitchen. However, it’s important that you pick the right counters. Granite comes in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and styles. And your counter is a major design element that can change the appearance of the entire room. If you select the wrong counters, you may not get the aesthetic appeal you want. Fortunately, with a little planning, you can make sure you get the perfect counters for your home. Take samples of your cabinet, floor, and paint colors Your countertops will likely tie your whole room together, so it’s important that they match up well with the colors of your other major design elements. If possible, get small sample pieces of your cabinets and your flooring and bring those with you when you pick out your counters. Also get a paint color card that shows your wall colors. If you’ll be doing a tile back splash, bring a tile with you as well. At the countertop store, lay these samples out around the counters that you’re considering. Make sure that you’re not mixing dark floors and cabinets with dark counters, as the dark shades could overpower the room. Look for colored spots in the counters that complement your paint and tile colors. There’s no science to picking the right color, but try to look for something that matches up well with your other elements. Think about lighting How much light will your kitchen get after the remodel? If it lacks a lot of natural light, then you may want to stay away from darker shades of granite. The darker counters could make the room look smaller. Also, look for counters that have gold specks or other reflective and bright coloring. Those spots could reflect the light that your kitchen does get, making the entire room look bigger. Consider room size Room size should also be a big factor in whether you get a darker or lighter granite. Dark granite in a small kitchen can make the room feel more crowded and cramped. On the other hand, a lighter granite can open the room up and make it feel bigger. Get the square footage of your kitchen and take those measurements with you to the granite store. The sales rep should be able to help you decide whether a shade is too dark for your kitchen. For more information, visit a store in your area that sells countertops, such as Plastic Line Mfg Inc. They can help you pick the perfect shade of granite for your...
